A point of interest is found by the main Gloucester Dock basin. Here the work of Nielsen boat maintenance company is carried out. There's normally about 7 or 8 boats being worked on, some quite large, some with masts. You can wonder walkways by these boats and read the boards detailing the background to each job. Its interesting to see the different types of boats close up and see it without charge.

Amazing variety of interesting ships & boats alo guide or within 2 large historic dry Docks. Kathleen and May is main feature, 124 year old last British built 3 masted still floating. Being carefully restored by volunteers, guided by the internationally renowned team from T Neilsen.

A small but very interesting shipyard in Gloucester Dock. Nielsens specialise in traditional shipbuilding, repair and restoration and although there is no public access to the shipyard a lot of the work they do can be seen from the footpath. There are two dry docks adjacent to the path, there are always interesting and often historic vessels to be seen in them and tall ships are frequent visitors. Well worth a look if you're in the area. Plenty of coffee shops nearby and Gloucester Quays shoppin

We visited as part of a U3A t trip, private visitors must phone before expecting a tour. The yard is a bit of a step back in time to the days when boats and ships were made from wood. It's main business is in repairing those that still exist, but they also have workers with skills in many other boatbuilding techniques, and production facilities to match. A great day out for we who got the bosses personal tour!
